PALILULA MUNICIPALITY IN `VECERNJE NOVOSTI` NEWSPAPER

NIS - Although, with 80,000 inhabitants, the second largest of the five municipalities in the city on the river Nišava, Palilula by many other parameters, for years, is at the bottom of the poorest municipalities in Serbia. Devastated economy, tens of thousands of unemployed, the average wage of 28,000 dinars and 67 per cent of the total of 11,000 social cases cases in the whole Nis, are only some of the data that illustrate the grim reality of this urban municipality. Two-thirds of people from Palilula is from urban area - including about 4,000 Roma people in unhygienic living conditions - and the rest of the population live in 15 rural settlements, with mostly elderly households. To stop the drain of young people from villages, it is good for them to create better conditions for agriculture, so that - among other things - only until the beginning of this year, up to arable land country road 24 kilometers of roads was constructed.

On this territory, furthermore, there are seven primary and three secondary schools, and the three faculties. The industry has long been just an idea, except "Žitopek" (now "Don Don") and `Niska Mlekara` -dairy, other companies - such as MIN or "Vulkan" - for a long time `haven`t been active or are closed , or are facing bankruptcy. In any case, workers have lost their jobs and become welfare cases.

MONEY SUPPORT from the EU, Palilula is - a little less than 180,000 euros - so far reconstructed memorial park Bubanj, a school in Pasi Poljana now has modern sports fields that cost 219,000 euros ...

- According to the scope of the use of IPA funds, Palilula is one of the most successful municipalities in the region and like that it will always have our full support - said recently in Nis Minister Jadranka Joksimovic (pictured, with the mayor Džunić).

- With not sufficient money, it is not easy to give even the very promise to the people, and we dont even speak here about doing something for them. With the documents we have traced the road of development, but with 160 million dinars a year we are getting from the City budget, only little can be realized - says the president of Palilula, Boban Džunić, emphasizing the full support of the City of Nis, but within the limits of available options. Therefore, the leadership of the Municipality is turned to alternative sources of funding - from IPA funds of the European Union, through cross-border cooperation with Bulgaria - Limited with authorities and resources, and putting citizens in the first place, we have focused on the construction of water supply and sewage systems, road infrastructure and transport of the inhabitants, with care of the young, elderly and socially disadvantaged. Let's not forget the improvement of agricultural production, sanitizing of slide terrains- concludes Džunić.
